The historic Churchill House, built in 1860 by Senator Ezra Churchill, owner of Churchill & Sons Shipyards, for his son John, is a fine example of classic 19th century architecture. The use of a variety of woods throughout the house, its uniquely painted walls and ceilings in a floral motif, beautiful chandeliers, fireplaces, and gilded mirrors are all reminiscent of the Victorian age.
Walls which were not hand-painted have the original heavily embossed gilt wall coverings known as imitation "Japanese leather".
The Marine Memorial Room in the house was established as a memorial to this seafaring era and has on display ship models, paintings, and mementos commemorating the men and ships of Hantsport's heritage.
This is also the original home of the da Silva paintings which have been removed for the Nova Scotia Art Gallery Folk Art Collection. Visitors can still see da Silva's work on the basement walls of the Churchill House.
